It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Irene May Wilson who died peacefully on November 28, 2022 in her 99th year. Irene was a loving wife to her husband Bob (predeceased), devoted mother to her children Nancy (Larry predeceased), Ralph (Pascale), Eric (Arlene) and adoring grandmother to Lauren (predeceased), Keri, Christine, Marc, Daniel, Peter, Robert and great grandmother to Jade.
Irene was born Yorkshire, England and moved to Canada with her family as a child. She had fond memories of playing with her brother on the boat to Canada and growing up in Guelph and Georgetown before moving with her family to Toronto. It was in Toronto where she started her working career first in a rug factory and then with the Toronto Parks Department at Old City Hall. It always amazed her how her department would go on a spending spree at the end of the year just to use up their budget rather than lose it. It was also in Toronto where she met her husband Bob and became focussed on raising her family. When her husband suddenly passed when she was only 49 she jumped back into the work force joining Hawker Siddeley where she had a long and successful career as an Executive Assistance. To this day she still receives an annual Christmas card from her former boss. After retiring from Hawker Siddeley Irene became active member in her church where she volunteered many hours in the church office updating files and working on newsletters. Also in retirement she became passionate with gardening and continued to spend countless hours toiling away until her physical abilities precluded her from doing so. Even when she started to rely on the use of a walker she could be seen walking back home from the garden centre with a bag or two of soil perched on the seat and bunch of flowers in the basket. Irene was strong and determined and it was this strength that allowed her to remain living alone in her home until the age of 99. With only minor support from a few wonderful Personal Support workers and regular calls from her sister in law Anne her spirits were kept high and she never stopped caring for her family. While we will miss her dearly, we are also incredibly grateful for the many years of precious memories that we will forever treasure.
