Raymond Ian Sereda
September 29, 1963 - November 12, 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our brother Ian. Born to Raymond and Helen (nee Macdonald) Sereda. Ian is survived by his brothers Stewart (Nancy) and Gregory (Lynne) and his sister Dian (Larry).

Ian struggled with mental health and addiction issues throughout his life. These issues prevented Ian from reaching his full potential and enjoying life as most of us would.

In spite of his issues Ian found fulfillment in life through his many interests. An avid butterfly collector Ian enjoyed being in the field with friends and family gathering specimens for his extensive collection. He corresponded with collectors around the world and imported non-native specimens to augment his collection.

Ian’s interest in nature extended beyond insects. He loved to fish and welcomed the May 24th long weekends when all of the men of the family would head north for a weekend of fishing. This tradition went on for many years and found us fishing in many different locations. Many Saturdays were spent at a private fishing pond where dad was a member. As well, Ian enjoyed nature documentaries on television sharing what he learned.

Ian loved classical guitar, taking lessons at the Eli Kassner Guitar Academy. He brought his guitar to most family functions and would find a quiet corner and provide background music. He played up to three years ago when unfortunately he had to give it up due to carpal tunnel. Ian enjoyed sharing techniques and songs with Greg as well as his nephew Jesse.

Ian loved to cook and spent a lot of time with mom learning how to prepare food. He not only enjoyed cooking but learning how to plate the food he prepared.

He also enjoyed expressing himself through poetry and at one point submitted a poem to the Reader’s Digest Poetry Contest. His piece was both accepted and published.

While these are some of things that defined and shaped Ian we can’t lose sight of the fact that his mental health and addiction issues consumed him. Addiction and mental issues can be merciless. It’s up to each of us to open our minds to those who are suffering and provide the support and understanding they deserve.

We hope your at peace Ian. What a long, strange trip it’s been.

As expression of sympathy, donations can be made to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).
