Hildegard Andrzejewski (nee Schumacher)
Hildegard Andrzejewski (nee Schumacher), a long-time resident of Brampton and a lifetime honorary member of the Hansa Haus German Club, died peacefully on May 3, 2020 at the age of 91.
Hildegard is survived by her son, Henry Andrzejewski, his spouse, June McGregor, and their sons, Kenneth and Ross McGregor; her daughter, Dianne Kring (nee Andrzejewski), her spouse, Franklin Kring, and their children, Amy, Heather and Devon Kring; her great-granddaughter, Harper Weatherall; her daughter-in-law, Helen Benoit; and several nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her spouse, Anthony Andrzejewski; her parents, Emil and Klementine Schumacher (nee Lamade); her sisters, Margaret Richter and Helene Kopytko (nees Schumacher); her brother, Walter Schumacher; and her son, Anthony Andrzejewski Jr.
Hildegard was born on May 20, 1928 in Mannheim, Germany. In the late 1940s, she met and married Anthony Andrzejewski, who was a civilian employee of the United States Army at the time. They decided to make a life together in Canada. He immigrated to Canada in 1950, and she followed in 1952. After living and working on a farm in Cobourg, they settled in Brampton, where she worked at Hewetson Shoe Company for many years. They welcomed three children into their lives: Anthony Jr., Henry and Dianne. Her family was the most important part of her life, and she was devoted to them. Years after her children were grown and had started their own families, she worked at Richter’s Meat and Delicatessen for several years.
Hildegard loved to sing, and she was a member of the Hansa Haus Choir for many years. With the choir, she travelled to competitions, and she sang in the Christmas Sing-Along concerts for which all of her family gathered every year. She also remained connected to her German heritage by being a long-standing member of the Hansa Haus Ladies Auxiliary, with whom she organized and worked at many club events. In her home life, she enjoyed word searches, puzzles, knitting, crocheting and gardening. She was also the heart of her family, and her family gathered at her home for every holiday feast and birthday celebration. She was known to her family and friends as a feisty person with a good, colourful sense of humour who spoke her mind and who was also considerate and helpful. She will be deeply missed by her friends, family and all who knew her.
A private Funeral Service is scheduled at the Meadowvale Cemetery in Brampton. Donations in Hildegard’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society. A memorial service will be held for the public after the state of emergency has ended.
