Helen Howard

Passed away on June 27th 2011 at Oakville, Ontario, in her 100th year. Dearly loved wife of the late Hunter Reid (1976) and the late Walter Howard (2004). Loving mother of Carol and her husband Ross Prince, and Bruce Reid and his wife Samantha. Dear step-mother of Murray (Pam) Howard, Greg (Carole) Howard, and the late Miriam Howard-Smith. Proud Grandma of Ian (Brynn) Prince, Andrea (Bruce) Prince Durrell, Daniel (Sarah), Hunter (Michelle), Marc (Andrea) and Kris (Sara) Reid, and step-grandma of Heather Nelson, Wendy (Gordon) Stevens, Bruce (Susan) Howard, Lorraine (Andrew) Swarts, Dan and Chris Howard, Megan (Rob) Kappes, and Devin (Nichole Borowik) Smith. Great grandmother of 22.

Born and raised in Massachusetts, Helen graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1933, arriving in Canada in 1935 following her marriage to Hunter Reid. An Oakville resident since 1942, she was very active in church and community affairs. She was a member of St. John’s United Church, past-president of St. John’s WA, past-president of Oakville Red Cross, past director of Ontario Division Red Cross and chair of the Women’s Work Committee, charter member of the University Women’s Club of Oakville, member of the IODE, long time volunteer at Oakville Hospital, and former member of the Oakville Parks and Recreation Commission.

After her marriage to Walter Howard, she lived in Beamsville for 12 years, returning to Oakville in 1990.

Cremation has taken place. A Memorial service will be held at St. John’s United Church, 262 Randall Street, Oakville, on Saturday July 16th 2011 at 11am with reception to follow in Lusk Hall.
