Joseph Carraro passed away peacefully on Monday, November 14th, at the age of 89.
Born in Treviso, Italy, Joseph immigrated to Canada in 1958, where he began his lifelong career of service to others. As a former Roman Catholic priest and reformer within Toronto’s Italian Community, he played a significant role in several organizations.
Among his many achievements, Joseph co-founded COSTI in 1962 to help his fellow Italians obtain the professional qualifications required to practice their trades in Canada.
He left Canada in 1968 to pursue his charitable works in England, Brazil, and Venezuela. During his time in England, he met his wife, Rita. From England, they traveled to Brazil to work in a remote community providing education and support for agricultural productivity. They married in Venezuela and eventually returned to Canada in 1972, where they had a home with their five beautiful children.
Joseph's motto was “help others to help themselves.” He firmly believed that you could achieve great things through education and community. This philosophy led him to be involved in organizations aimed at providing support and enriching the world through art, music, culture, and education. These organizations include INAS, Federazione Veneta, The Golden Age Academy, Vita Mens Sana, Caritas, and more. He was awarded the 2002 Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee Medal (Order of Canada) for his numerous extraordinary contributions to the communities he diligently served.
Although very accomplished, he was a humble man who loved learning, music, and most of all, his family.
Joseph was predeceased by his beloved wife, Rita. He is survived by his children, Deborah and husband Artur, Roberta and partner Ryan, Manuela and husband Joe, Edward, Albert and fiancée Stefanie. Cherished Nonno to Sofia and Simon.
Loving son of the late Emilio and Ida. Giuseppe is the dear brother to Anna Maria and brother-in-law to Bruna.
He will be sadly missed by his many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Predeceased by his brother Sergio, his sisters Rita, Maria Luisa, and Maria, and his brothers-in-law Italo and Giuseppe.
“Forever in our hearts.”
Joseph's life will be celebrated in a memorial mass at St. Peter's Church, 100 Bainbridge Ave, Woodbridge, on Monday, November 28, 2022, at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
