Sandness, Gilford – Passed away peacefully at Maple Health Centre on Wednesay, April 24, 2013. Gilford in his 93rd year beloved husband of the late Elizabeth (1980). Dear father of Robert (Susanne), Linda (John Fogolin) and David (Elisabeth). Loving grandfather of Christopher, Laura (Stephen King) , Paul, John and Katarina. Great –grandfather of Wesley King and Geoffrey King. Predeceased by his sister Evelyn(Birkland) and is survived by his sister Bernice Silde. Born in Saskatchewan June 24th, 1920, he completed his High School diploma by correspondence. He volunteered for the RCAF and quickly became a Flying Officer. He served in Training Command as an instructor and met his future wife , Elizabeth (Betty), at an Air Force dance at the Seabreeze. He then was sent to England for a 9 month assignment. After returning from the war, he studied at the University of Toronto graduating with a degree in Pharmacy. He first worked for the Charles Frosst Company (Merck) for many years and then became co-owner of Elmhurst Drugs in Rexdale. After selling his share in Elmhurst, he continued to serve as a pharmacist on a part time basis at a variety of pharmacies.
An avid history enthusiast he very much enjoyed reading and discussing world history and in particular WW II and the Civil War. He also loved cars, steam engines and taking long car trips with family. Baseball was his sports passion. Classical music was another interest, especially the Strauss waltzes. He also enjoyed cooking and made a mean chicken soup. He shared his passion for aviation with both his sons becoming pilots.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Maple Health Centre for their excellent care and kindness during his final years.
A private service for family only will be held at Ward Funeral Home followed by interment at Assumption Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the charity of your choice.
