Garrett Whelan

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Garrett James Whelan. Surrounded by his loved ones, Garrett passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on October 5, 2023, at Sunnybrook Health Center in his 43rd year.

Beloved husband and best friend of Lindsey. Loving father of Connell. Dear son of Dechia and Jim (Angela). Devoted brother of Justin (Erin), Brett (Allison), Abilene (Steven), and Marshall (Judy). He will be lovingly remembered by his nieces & nephews, Natalie, Liam, North & Ariat. He will be sadly missed by his in-laws, Glenn & Diana, as well as his brother-in-law Steven, cherished grandson of Ira and Priscilla Strongman and the late Basil and Lillian (Ninny) Whelan. Garrett will also be missed and remembered by his aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Garrett was originally from rural Hamilton, where he spent much of his life until he met his beloved wife, Lindsey.

He was adventurous, loved life, and enjoyed spending time at home in Bracebridge and on the water in Muskoka with Lindsey and their faithful dog, Baron.

Fiercely protective of his loved ones and always willing to lend a hand or a compassionate ear to people he encountered, Garrett was adored and respected by more people than could be counted. He was the type of man who always made such a difference in the lives of those around him and put others first. Along with the other accomplishments in his life, Garrett was a well respected, talented horseman with many awards and achievements to his name. The family would like to recognize Flamborough Downs, his home track and where he spent many of his formative years developing a passion that was passed down through the generations of his family.

Garrett enjoyed visiting Prince Edward Island to spend time with his extended family. His love for gardening was reflected in his ability to nurture and grow beauty from the simplest of spaces. Garrett was a strong and passionate handyman, always at work around his home in Bracebridge or his family farm in Troy. Sports were his escape and his passion. Whether it was cheering for his favorite hockey team or bonding with friends over a game of golf, he always enjoyed the camaraderie.

The family would like to thank Garrett’s medical team, led by Dr. James Perry, and the medical staff at Sunnybrook Health Center for their kind and compassionate care.

In honor of Garrett's wishes, cremation has taken place—a celebration of life to be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research through Sunnybrook Health Center.

Garrett Whelan, you will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Though you may no longer be with us in person, your spirit lives on in the memories we hold dear. May we find solace in knowing that your legacy will forever bloom in the gardens you tended, the homes you built, and the hearts you touched.
