VISSER, FREDERICK JOHANNES

May 13, 1927 – November 11, 2021

On November 11th, Fred Visser passed away surrounded by his loving family. Fred was born in The Hague, Netherlands. His early life was significantly impacted by his parents’ strong Christian faith and the war which left him with a lifelong love for Christ, a heart for peace and a strong distaste for violent conflict. After the war, Fred graduated university as a textile engineer and was preparing to enter the family business when his younger brother, Hans, invited him to Canada to attend his wedding. That visit turned into a full time move to Canada and was eventually followed by the rest of his family. He often described life in Canada as ‘fresh air for his lungs’.

Fred found work at Simpson’s in logistics where he met the love of his life June “Junie” Visser (nee Chapman). They shared 61 years of marriage until she passed away in a tragic accident on April 21, 2020. Fred and Junie shared a long and beautiful history together. Their love and family were built on the foundation of faith in their Lord Jesus Christ. Fred was an exceptional and loving father and he took great joy in his family, including his three children, Mark, Joanne (Jeff) and Jennifer (Richard). Fred was adored by his grandchildren who knew him as “Opa”; Allison (Hunter), Jacob, Jenai, Joel, Victoria and Adam miss him and are the better for having had his love and representation of God’s grace in their lives.

The family will miss Fred’s loving, humorous and playful presence and are forever thankful to God for the legacy he leaves behind in the form of music, faith, love and family mixed in with his spirit of “bah” representing his general disrespect for rules and authority! Fred cherished his faith and nurtured this with the deep study of the Bible and teaching what he learned – he was a beloved Sunday school teacher for generations of students at Westmount Park Church (now Capstone). Fred was a talented singer who loved singing harmonies and eschewed lyrics. Why clutter music with words when ‘ba, ba, ba’ works just fine?

Special thanks to the amazing staff at Humber Heights (especially Anna, Emelia, Jamila, Keisha, Trish, Nellie, Tenzin, Josh and Hardeep to name just a few), Barbara Manners and beautiful Bennie from LINDH, especially in the last two months of his life. You are truly the loving hands of God. The family also wants to recognize the outpouring of support, love and prayers from our

friends and faith communities. Your love and support are a testament to Fred’s legacy and we are humbled by your generous love. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Fred can be made to Doctors Without Borders:
