Franziska Schreiner-Farrell 1920-2017
Franziska (Fran) Schreiner-Farrell, born in Wiesbaden, Germany, on November 16, 1920, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 15, 2017 in Oakville. Predeceased by her beloved husband Edward (Ted) Charles Farrell, Fran was the loving step-mother of Ted’s five children: David, Mary Ann, Siobhan, Dominic, and Judy (deceased). Fran was also the proud step-grandmother of D’Arcy, Brendan, and Lewis (David and Patricia); Zoe (Mary Ann and Harry); and Gillian and Corrina (Siobhan and Murray).
Fran came to Canada following World War II, settling first in Montreal. There she found work as a nannie and working with children. Fran knew that teaching children was her calling and after some difficult years, Fran became certified as a teacher.
Leaving Montreal, Fran spent some time teaching in Goose Bay, Labrador, before moving to Barrie and then, finally, Oakville. Here she began a decades-long career teaching children for the town’s Catholic school board. Teaching children and her Catholic faith were the pillars of Fran’s life, and she selflessly shared the benefits of education and faith with the countless children who were lucky enough to be taught by her.
Fran gave her love and energy not just to her students but also to her many friends. She also shared a great love with her husband, Ted, who she married in 1975. Sharing travels, theatre, music, friends, family, and their faith, Fran and Ted enjoyed a great many joyous years together.
Fran will be sorely missed by the many who loved and respected her.
A visitation will be held Friday, January 20 at Ward Funeral Home, 109 Reynolds Street, Oakville between 7p.m. and 9p.m. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews Catholic Church, 47 Reynolds Street, Oakville on Saturday, January, 21, at 11 a.m.
