Flora Hunter-Renaud (nee Moffat) May 18, 1923 Weston, Ontario - January 4, 2022, Guelph, Ontario Flora passed away peacefully in her 99th year and will be remembered as a kind and loving mother to her four children Murray (Monika) Hunter, Christine (Dan) Roberge, John (Amy) Hunter, and Carol (Mark) Hunter. Flora is also survived by six grandchildren, one great grandchild, and sister Carol. Flora is predeceased by her two spouses, Murray Hunter and Hugh Renaud, and her brother Robert. Flora was born in Weston to Gordon and Olive Moffat and was the first grandchild of John King Moffat, President of the Moffat Stove Company. She spent her childhood in Rogers City, Michigan, where her father Gordon served as a public health doctor and a vocal champion for vaccination (a memory that Flora shared often during the Covid pandemic). Flora graduated from Havergal College in Toronto and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto where she was awarded the Golden Key for her contributions to undergraduate life. Flora then taught at Havergal until she started raising her family with her husband Murray Hunter in 1949. Flora returned to teaching in 1968 and was a guidance counsellor at George Vanier Secondary School in Toronto until 1987. She retired when she married Hugh and moved to Bracebridge. Flora will be remembered for her intellectual curiosity and strong Christian values as well as her laughter and love of extended family and close friends. She was an avid reader and bookclub member, and took the personal challenge upon herself to read James Joyce’s Ulysses in her 70’s. She was also an active volunteer with the Anglican Church Women (ACW), Interval House, I.O.D.E. and a member of Probus and the University Women’s Club. Flora loved to expand her knowledge through travel and explored six of the seven continents.
Flora’s special places were her childhood family cottage on Pen Lake and her cottage on Bella Lake. She lived up to her name and knew the names of most forest and roadside wildflowers. She would press fern and flower specimens into her treasured wildflower books and make beautiful floral arrangements. Picking wild raspberries and making pies was a cottage ritual, as were her morning swims come rain or shine. Mom will always be remembered for opening our bedroom curtains each morning with her “Rise and Shine and Praise the Lord” call to action. She inspired us all through her hard work, strength, and dedication, and always looked for the best in people. The family wish to thank the staff of Arbour Trails in Guelph for their care of our mother for the past eight years as well as the staff at Hospice Wellington where Mom spent her last days. A private burial with immediate family will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Weston. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Services for Mrs. Flora Hunter-Renaud have been entrusted to Ward Funeral Home (Weston Chapel). If you would like to leave a condolence message on Mrs Hunter-Renaud's memorial page it would be appreciated by the family.
