FERGUS JAMES (FERGY) BROWN
Peacefully, on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, K Wing. Husband of sixty-three years to Marjorie (Barrett), devoted father of David (Chantal Samuel) and Judy (Jesse Ventura), proud Grandpa of Albert, Julie, Bethany (Mark Hardy), Rebecca and Gregory, and cherished great-Grandpa of Adelaide. He was predeceased by his brother William.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland on October 31, 1923; he emigrated to Canada with his parents in July 1929. He left York Memorial Collegiate in Grade XI to help support the family, before enlisting in the RCAF in September 1942. He trained as a bomb aimer and flew operationally on Lancaster aircraft with 189 Squadron, 5 Bomber Group, based in Lincolnshire.
Following the war, Fergy graduated from Pharmacy at the University of Toronto. He joined, and later owned, Gould’s Drug Store on Eglinton Avenue West at Dufferin Street until 2000. He was successively elected Alderman, Controller, and Mayor of the City of York; serving two terms as Mayor from 1988-94, and as a member of Metropolitan Toronto Council, from 1978-94. On Metro Council, he took a particular interest in community services and housing, the CNE Association, the O’Keefe Centre, and chaired the Metro Hall Building Committee.
After leaving political life, he continued his public service with St. Hilda’s Towers Seniors Residence, the Harold & Grace Baker Centre, Yorktown Family Services, and the Learning Enrichment Foundation. He was a long-time supporter and board member of LEF, including 15 years as vice-president, and president from 20o7-09. He remained on the Board until his passing.
Interment will take place at Park Lawn Cemetery following a private family service at Ward’s Funeral Home, Weston. A Service of Remembrance will be held at The Learning Enrichment Foundation (116 Industry Street, Toronto, ON M6M 4L8) on Tuesday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined.
