Husband, Father & Nonno
Born: May 17, 1926
Life began back in Northern Italy (Friuli). As a young man Ermes "Nonno" was very fond of life and had a great passion for bicycling and playing the harmonica. Growing up at the age of 14 when most of us today would be starting High School Ermes was already working at the brick factory pushing trolleys filled with bricks! When he wasn't working he was helping family and friends with many chores. As for payment, he was fed cheese or bread if he was lucky and in those days this was expected, not a choice.
As time passed when Ermes turned 19 he went to Belgium and began working with Uncle Mario in the Coal Mines for a period of almost 2 years. After this time Ermes returned back to his home town San Giorgio della Richinvelda. This is where he met the love of his life Maria "Nonna"!!
Soon after he began working with his future father-in-law in the marble trade. Ermes was a very hard working individual never really making much money but always happy!
As time passed, in 1952 Ermes finally asked Maria to become his wife. On May 17th, 1952 on his birthday they wed. Perhaps he did that so he would never forget their Wedding Anniversary! Soon after their first son Livio was born.
After working various jobs he set his goals higher. Since other family had moved to Canada for a new beginning, he finally received the answer he was waiting for, his Sister Teresa would sponsor his move to Canada! In 1954 he set off to start his new life unfortunately having to leave his new wife and son behind. He began working in Carpentry and setting grounds for a new future. A year had passed and finally they were reunited as a family!! As many newcomers money was little and the means to live were basic.
In 1957 their second son Gianni was born and in 1967 their third son Franco was born. They lived under "room and board" with family and friends for some time. Soon after in 1963 they finally found the home of their dreams to which they still reside!
Nonno sadly passed away peacefully at the age of 91 with his loving family by his side. Beloved Husband of Maria for 65 years, loving Father of Livio (Janis), Gianni (Donna), Franco (Renee). Cherished Nonno of Kevin, Andrea and Jessica.
Ermes will be missed by his sister Teresa Tesan and will be remembered by his nieces; nephews; family and friends.
He will be forever remembered for his commitment to everyone who knew him and his love of hunting, gardening and good will.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Baycrest Hospital (Palliative Care Unit), Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Lung Associaton.
