Efisio Di Sanza

It is with great sadness that we announce that Efisio Austerio Di Sanza of Toronto, Ontario, departed this earthly life on Monday December 5, 2022, at the age of 89. He is survived by Giovanna, his wife of 65 years, his daughters Caterina, Edvige, son Ulderico and extended family.

Efisio was born in Pietransieri, P. Aquila, on February 17, 1933 to the late Caterina Di Gregorio and Ulderico Di Sanza. and was the brother of Celestina, Sandrina, Franco and the late Nella. He grew up in the countryside of Italy and had many stories about his childhood spent tending the family farm. Life changed during the war bringing many hardships; as a boy he survived the German occupation of Italy, the Limmari Massacre and all the challenges that war brings.

After the war as a young man he served his 2 year military service where he excelled as an army cook and then went on to spend many years in the hospitality industry working in the resort town of Roccaraso where he met his wife Giovanna Liberatore. Efisio and Giovanna were married on December 26, 1957. Looking for a better life, Efisio and Giovanna emigrated to Toronto in 1966 with their two daughters Caterina and Edvige. They later had a third child, a son, Ulderico.

Efisio was an avid gardener and he loved spending his time outdoors working in his vegetable garden. Both Efisio and Giovanna were extraordinary cooks creating the finest Italian dishes for the family weekend gatherings. These weekend events became the centerpiece for the family where everyone gathered to enjoy good food and a taste of authentic Italy. As a result the entire family has a lifelong love and understanding for Italian cuisine and culture.

Efisio worked much of his life in the construction industry well into his 70's where he enjoyed the camaraderie of being part of a team and the challenge of a hard day's work. He was a man with immense strength and fortitude who was tireless in his efforts.
He had a love for music and dancing and enjoyed his collection of old Italian classics which you could hear throughout the house on many occasions. He had a helpful spirit, and was always willing to lend a hand to neighbours and friends. He was well thought of in the neighbourhood and was ready with a smile and friendly greeting to all who passed by.

Efisio lived a long and fulfilling life, and will be remembered and missed by all.

Services will be held at Ward Funeral Homes Weston Chapel, 2035 Weston Road, Toronto, Ontario, M9N 1X7, on Saturday December 10, 2022, at 1:00 pm.
