Dr. John Thomas Elliott, MD. CCFP. (retired)
August 31, 1921 – October 27, 2013
Born in North Toronto, in 1921, John (“Jack”) Thomas Elliott was the baby brother of siblings Noel, Les and Margaret. He attended public school, then followed the frugal family tradition of working to support senior secondary education delivering fresh bread and donuts by horse and cart. His delivering journeys took him all over the Rosedale area. This pursuit was interrupted as Jack volunteered in the RCAF, subsequently serving as a radar technician in various U.K. coastal airfields with radar equipped low level flight sorties patrolling U-boats in the North Sea. Upon his return after the war, he completed his secondary education at night while dating his tennis partner and sweetheart, Joyce. Following his childhood dream to emulate his oldest brother Noel, a physician, Jack graduated in medicine at University of Toronto in 1952. Following a spectacular Haliburton Highlands wedding, as a couple they migrated to Mimico to proudly dedicate themselves to the needs of their community. Soon, having a thriving family practice responsible for numerous deliveries of newborns in the area, Jack was regarded with great esteem due to the deeply personal quality and tender care he provided all his patients. He was actively involved at St. Joseph’s on the Queensway, becoming Head of Family Practice. He continued his practice right up to his late 80’s making house calls in his Marcus Welby M.D. manner. His fascination and love of sailing continued with his surrounding family, even owning an electric remote controlled sailboat to sail around the swimming pool in his later years.
Further displaying his sincere character of serving the community he adopted a proxy daughter, Andrea Ward, a neighbour, who at the time was four years old. The quality of love, caring, new experiences, teaching and learning that went on in that home, made significant lifelong changes in Andrea’s and later her daughter, Charlotte’s life, both baptized under their name. Jack was the most amazing father figure to Charlotte, Andrea and Jim, with a talent for telling jokes, bringing joy to difficult situations and providing unconditional kindness love and loyalty towards all his friends and family.
