Passed away peacefully in Oakville on March 10, 2016 after a brief illness. Predecesed by his beloved wife, Joan (nee Sparfel) and his sister Ursula Woolley. Survived by his children, Stephen Loeb (Ginny), Graham Loeb (Janice), Karen Natale (Cam), Lori Loeb (Paul MacKenzie) and Vicki Sydor (Richard); his grandchildren: Matthew Loeb, Stephanie Loeb, Andrew Loeb, Nicholas Loeb, Daniel Loeb, Jeffrey Loeb, Kira Loeb, David Sydor and Katie Sydor; and by his neices and nephew: Diane, Lorraine, and Anthony.
Jack was born in Berlin on August 31, 1925. His family immigrated to England in May 1939. Three years later he graduated from Reading School with the highest marks in Britain in Chemistry. He earned his M.B.B.S. from Guy's Hospital Medical School at the University of London in 1949. He was awarded the Gold Medal as the top graduate of the thirteen medical schools of the University of London, and the Golding Bird Gold Medal in obstetrics and gynaecology. He completed his national service in the Royal Army Medical Corps in Jamaica, Belize and Grenada in 1950 and 1951. He went on to specialize in surgery and obtained his F.R.C.S. in 1955. In 1959 he came to Canada. He was Chief Resident at St. Joseph's Hospital in Toronto from 1959 to 1962. He was a general surgeon at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital from 1962 to 1985 and Chief of Surgery from 1974 to 1980. Upon retiring from the practice of surgery, he began an appointment as Tutor in Anatomy and Surgical Consultant to the Department of Anatomy in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He was co-author of the second edition of Thompson's Core Textbook of Anatomy (1989). In addition to his distinguished surgical and academic career, Jack was a keen athlete who skied, played tennis and golfed until his mid 80s, a voracious reader, an opera buff and an enthusiastic international traveller.
Family and friends will be received at the Ward Funeral Home 'Oakville Chapel', 109 Reynolds Street, Oakville on Monday, March 14th from 10-11am. Service to follow in the chapel at 11am. A private family interment at St. Jude's Cemetery, Oakville will take place at a later date.
