On Friday, May 20 @ 8:10 pm, Douglas Wilkinson was “Promoted to Glory” just shy of 92 years of age. With family by his side, holding his hand, playing hymns and talking to him, he was escorted by a beautiful sunset. He was the beloved husband of Helena for 62 years, loving father of twin daughters, Joanne and Karen and her husband, Perry.
Doug was born on July 31, 1930 and raised in Toronto (East York) as an only child. His mother was a “Trull” (of Trull Funeral Homes). His astrology sign was Leo the Lion, and he embraced that symbol vigorously. He married his first and only love, Helena and they were devoted to each other until her “Promotion to Glory” in 2013. This loss was profound for him. They were devout Christians and led an exemplary lifestyle. They loved traveling together, especially to Barbados and enjoyed family gatherings as often as possible.
Doug was an Engineer for Ontario Hydro for 40 years, working in the concrete lab. He was extremely smart and enjoyed anything related to planes and ships. And his big passion was food – he loved to cook and eat!
Doug was a great storyteller and always had something interesting to share. He had a quick wit and strong opinions, which were not always enjoyed by everyone. Many looked to him for advice. As a devoted family man, he ensured his family was taken care of. He always had a positive attitude, no matter what he was facing. Doug was a good man. His values and integrity will live on in our lives.
Doug will be held dear in our hearts and deeply missed by many. Joanne, Karen and Perry extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at both the Village of Humber Heights and Humber River Hospital for their care, especially during the last precious days of his life. He was a brave Lion. Family and friends will be received at the Ward Funeral Home, 2035 Weston Rd, York on Wednesday, June 1 from 10 am – 12 pm. Immediately following, there will be a procession to the cemetery with a graveside service.
