Douglas Sharkey, 72, of Weston, died on April 5th, 2024 at home surrounded by his loving family. After a year of mysterious health issues, Doug had recently been diagnosed with ALS and succumbed to the disease. He was born on December 15th, 1951 to John and Edith Sharkey in Weston.Doug attended York University and studied Humanities but was a lifelong learner and seeker of knowledge — a largely self-taught man who found beauty and truth in nature and the world around him. His travels to India in the early 70s, his pottery studio Stonebow which he started with life partner and true love Julienne Pearce, his work as a systems architect, designing main-frame computers and his love for gardening and hockey all speak to his iconoclastic and intelligent spirit. Doug partnered with Julienne Pearce in the spring of 1975 and they had three children Sarah Sharkey Pearce, Lucas Sharkey Pearce and Jacob Sharkey Pearce. After closing their pottery studio in 1982, Doug worked for Sears until his early retirement at 55.
Doug is survived by his wife Julienne Pearce, and his children Sarah Sharkey Pearce, Lucas Sharkey Pearce and Jacob Sharkey Pearce, his daughters-in-law Marie-Pierre Touré, Sonya Verma and Emory Davidge and his grandchildren Elias Sharkey Pearce, Imogen Sharkey Pearce, Riel Sharkey Pearce, Aïda Sharkey Pearce, Frances Davidge and Noa Davidge.
A memorial service will be held with refreshments and music at Wards Funeral Home in Weston on Friday, April 19th at 3pm to celebrate Doug together with his family and friends.
