Douglas Lang

Lang, Allan Douglas (“Doug”)
Passed away peacefully in his sleep in his 87th year in the early hours of Thursday, July 30, 2015 at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, due to complications from pulmonary fibrosis. Survived by Mary (nee Chapman), his loving wife of 52 years. Father of Janet Lang (Nancy Hanschmann), Andrew Lang (Judy), and Jennifer Scheuring (Tom). Beloved grandfather of Robyn, Jennifer, Christopher, Alicia, Katrina and Erika. Doug was born and raised on the family farm in Châteauguay, Quebec where he developed the strong work ethic that he applied to everything he did. Realizing that the life of a farmer was not what he wanted, Doug attended McGill University in Montreal, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (1950) majoring in Mathematics. Doug only had one paying job after graduation, working at Sun Life Assurance Company for 44 years until his retirement in 1994. Doug and his family left Châteauguay for Oakville in August, 1980 as part of the move of Sun Life’s headquarters to Toronto, eventually selling off the farm that had been in the family since 1831. Always a hard worker, Doug rose to the top ranks in almost everything he did: Vice-President of Human Resources at Sun Life, Elder at St. Andrew’s United Church in Châteauguay, Commodore of the Woodlands Yacht Club, and President of the following: Châteauguay Valley Protestant School Board, Quebec Association of Protestant School Boards, Insurance Accounting and Systems Association, Rotary Club of Oakville, and Oakville Lawn Bowling Club. Spending his early years on the farm had not left much time for idle pursuits, but Doug did become an avid curler in Châteauguay and continued that as a member of the Oakville Curling Club until he had to give up playing a few years ago. With a family tree that traces back to Scotland, Doug’s other pastime was enjoying a glass of scotch, which he liked to do once a day (sometimes more) whether at home or as a member of the Companions of the Quaich. A quiet man who led more by example than by words, Doug/Dad/Grandpa was much loved and will be missed. If we measure wealth by the number of family, friends and colleagues left behind, Doug was a rich man. The family will receive friends at Ward Funeral Home, 109 Reynolds St., Oakville (905-844-3221) on Thursday, August 20th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A service to celebrate his life will be held at Maple Grove United Church, 346 Maple Grove Dr., Oakville (905-845-5721) on Friday, August 21st at 10 a.m. In keeping with Doug’s wishes, he has been cremated and will be interred in Châteauguay Protestant Cemetery on Saturday, September 19th at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Maple Grove United Church (http://www.maplegroveunitedchurch.org/index.php/category/donations/) or Rotary Foundation (https://www.rotary.org//take-action/give) would be appreciated.
