Passed away peacefully surrounded by family at The Village of Sandalwood Park in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 18, 2015 in his 93rd year.
Beloved husband of the late Marie, for 68 years. Loving father of Don and Janet. Devoted grandfather of Dan, Laura (Scott), Melanie, Eric, Kira (Ed) and Adam (Melissa). Cherished great-grandfather of Ethan, Griffin, Jacob, Paige, Charlotte and Beau. Older brother to twins, the late Harold and Alex.
Don served as a pilot officer in the R.C.A.F. during WW II and as a constable in the O.P.P. between 1950 and 1962. He was the Governor of the Peel County Jail from 1962 to 1972. He went on from there to serve as Ass’t Superintendent of the Don Jail and as Deputy Superintendent of the Millbrook Correctional Facility before becoming an Inspector, and later Deputy Chief Inspector, for the Ministry of Correctional Services. Throughout his career in corrections, Don was a firm believer in rehabilitation. Following his retirement, he served as a member of the Ontario Parole Board and later volunteered, until well into his eighties, in many capacities aimed at assisting with rehabilitation: John Howard Society, St. Leonard’s House, O.C.I.
Don had an unfailing sense of humour and loved meeting people and putting them at ease. He was an avid Airstream Camper, enthusiastic travelling companion and mischievous card player. Most of all, he was devoted to his family. He will be much missed by family and friends alike.
Thanks to all who cared for him at Holland Christian Homes, Woodhall Retirement Village and The Village of Sandalwood Park. Special thanks to May Gordon and Onye Anochie, his constant companions during his last months at Holland Christian Homes.
