Crofton Harvey passed away in Florida on Saturday, February 20, 2010 after a long illness. Beloved husband of Faith for 54 years; loving father of Susan (Harvey) Schijns and Cam Harvey; dear Papa to Cassandra, Catriona, and Campbell Harvey II and Timothy, Rebecca and Evan Schijns; and father-in-law to Susie Harvey and Stephen Schijns. Crofton will be greatly missed by his sister Allene Fleck of Calgary and her children Tracy Austin, Rod, Gary and Brian Fleck, as well as his brother Russ and wife Peggy of Minette, Ontario.
Crofton was born in Mimico in 1929 to Katherine and Russell Harvey. He trained for military service but WWII ended before he was called to duty. He spent his career in the printing business. He followed his father’s path as a photoengraver. Later he found another career in sales, rising to the position of Vice-President at Offset, Print and Litho in Toronto.
Crofton was always engaged in sports. As a young man, he was a member of the Don Rowing Club. His Eight narrowly missed qualifying for the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. He will be greatly missed by his fellow oarsman and friend of 65 years, Jack Tipping (and his wife Joan).
In addition to his family, Crofton had a passion for golf. His favourite book was The Rules of Golf. He was a member of the Weston Golf and Country Club for 52 years and a member of the Quail Ridge Golf Club in Florida for 32 years. He was club Captain at Weston in 1970 and served on the Board of Directors. In 1998, he was elected President of the Ontario Golf Association. He served as a Governor of the Royal Canadian Golf Association and the Canadian Seniors Golf Association. Each year the Crofton Harvey Shield is presented at the Golf Association of Ontario’s George S. Lyon Team Championship. However, most of Crofton’s energy was devoted to junior golf. He spent numerous volunteer hours helping promote the sport for young people.
The family will have a private burial for Crofton. A reception to celebrate his life will be scheduled in May. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be sent to the Heart and Stroke Association of Ontario (1-888-473-4636) P.O. Box 7008, Station Main, London, ON, N5Y 5W7, or www.heartandstroke.on.ca.
