Graefner, Catherine (Rena) née Flannigan, on August 5, 2022, in her 92nd year.
Rena is survived by her beloved daughter Ingrid and son-in-law Steve Knight, her daughter-inlaw Kim Graefner and her brother Kevin Slavin. She leaves behind 5 granddaughters, Shannon (Kelly), Nicole (Solon), Erica (Oziel), Allison (Dean) and Lisa. Rena’s biggest heartbreak is not being able to see her great grandchildren grow up (Bryce, Mia, Ava, Chloe, Mila, Zack and Kai). She was the much loved and liked Grannie of Curly, Lola, Tacoma and Joey.
Rena is predeceased by her son Stewart Graefner (2016), father James Flannigan (1937), mother, Rita Slavin (1987), brother Ian Loudon (2014) and brother Stephen Slavin (1986). Rena will be missed by her niece Theresa and great niece, Alix, her cousin Michaela and family in England and the many long time friends she has both locally and around the world. Her contributions to the three writing groups she belonged to will also be missed.
Rena’s life began in a small town called Wishaw in Scotland and ended in Brampton, Ontario. Her careers spanned from seamstress and furrier to Vice Principal of a private fashion design institute to a world wide tour guide/manager. Her favourite career by far was in touring which allowed her to see parts of the world she never would have otherwise and to make friends from all parts of the globe. Rena was also a champion speed skater, a dancer, a tennis player, and a skier.
Many thanks go to Bethell Hospice for the care Rena received in the final weeks of her life. In lieu of flowers, donations to Bethell Hospice would be appreciated. If you are attending the memorial for Rena, please honour her zest for life by wearing bright colours.
