Carmela Marano (nee Niro)

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Carmela Marano (nee Niro), a cherished mother, nonna, and bisnonna, on July 19, 2024. She is survived by her two daughters, Domenica and Rosa (David), her five grandchildren, her nine great-grandchildren, and her three great-great-grandchildren. 

Born in Vinchiaturo, Campobasso, Italy, on June 7, 1926, Carmela epitomized hard work, selflessness, and bravery - always putting the needs of others before her own. On April 7, 1954, she and her daughters (3 and 9) said goodbye to her father and relatives who had accompanied her from their village to Naples, and began the journey to New York on the ocean liner, the Andrea Doria, eventually completing their move to Canada. She worked tirelessly to provide for her daughters, and later, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. She took immense pride in maintaining a spotless home, but always had space for her rosaries and pictures of her many grandkids (as well as some fruit, bread and prosciutto to serve them when they visited!) Carmela dedicated 35 years of her life to Lancia Bravo, known there too, for her commitment.

“Nonna Carmela” was a true matriarch - her strength was unmatched; she faced hardship with resilience and a desire to shield her family from anguish. Even in the face of dementia in her later days, Carmela continued to confront adversity with an unwavering drive to put others first. Her kind heart, unbounding love, and spirit of generosity were just some of the reasons she was so beloved by her family, friends and the staff at Maple Health Centre, where she spent her final years.

Family and friends will be received at the Ward Funeral Home (4671 Highway 7, Woodbridge) on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service to will take place in the Ward Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at 10:30 a.m., followed by a private family interment.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Carmela's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
