Carl Yakimoff

On Wednesday September 11th, 2024 Carl John Yakimoff passed away peacefully in his 92nd year.
Carl is survived by his loving wife, Beatrice Margaret (nee Cornelius), his son, Stephen Carl (Silvia) and his grandchildren Amanda and Eric, who will miss him dearly. He is predeceased by his parents, Stoyan and Lillian Yakimoff, his older sister, Hope (who he affectionately called Hopie) and his twin sister, Caroline. Carl was born in Key Junction, Ontario and raised in Toronto.

He graduated from the University of Toronto and began a career in education, starting as a teacher, then vice-principal and principal, working his way up to Superintendent at the Etobicoke Board of Education. Teaching brought him great joy and allowed him to also incorporate his love of sports into his everyday life through the many teams he coached. In the late 1960s, Carl and a colleague started a hockey camp in Sundridge, Ontario with such Canadian NHL greats as Tim Horton, Paul Henderson and Yvon Cournoyer, as instructors. When he retired at age 55, he and his son opened a sporting goods business together, continuing to bring his love of sport into his life. In addition to coaching, Carl also enjoyed playing sports including tennis, squash, baseball, football and golf. He enjoyed the company of his friends on the golf course, and later in life at the local Tim Hortons, grabbing a cup of coffee and a Boston cream donut. What brought him the most joy was his grandchildren. He was always interested in their accomplishments in the classroom and in sports. He never missed a baseball or hockey game and was always engaged, standing behind home plate or by the boards. The past few years slowed him down a bit but he still maintained his independence, driving to see his friends and family and spending time with his beloved wife of over 60 years, Beatrice.

Carl's family wishes to thank the team of caregivers at Humber Heights Retirement Residence who gave him such great care and attention, especially in the past few weeks. Respecting Carl’s wishes, a private service will be held with his family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Carl’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada would be gratefully appreciated.
