MacBRIDE, Bryan Alexander
Bryan Alexander MacBride, after a prolonged illness, passed away at Toronto General
Hospital on August 18, 2021 at the age of 78, born in Ottawa on June 30, 1943.
Predeceased by his mother, Lorraine Blanche (née MacKey) (2003), his father, Alexander
Henry (2008), and his brother, Timothy Andrew (2016) (Arlene), he was survived by his
only child, his son, Richard Patrick, of Nanaimo, B.C., and his former spouse, Eva, of
Victoria, B.C., and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bryan studied Commerce and Finance at the University of Toronto from 1962 to 1964;
he was enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto where he obtained
his LL.B. degree in 1967. He articled with Robertson, Lane, Perrett, Frankish & Estey
from Sep 1967 to Aug 1968, took the Bar Admission Course at the Law Society of Upper
Canada from Sep 1968 to May 1969 and was called to the Ontario Bar in June 1969. He
worked as a sole practitioner, in association with other lawyers from 1970 to 2021, and
his boutique practice consisted of real estate, wills and estates, powers of attorney,
family law and divorce, and immigration law.
From Jun 1967 to Sep 1967 Bryan taught commercial subjects full-time (including law)
and divided those subjects between two “Adult Education Centres”, one of which was
in Etobicoke (which later evolved into the original Humber College campus), and the
other at College & Bathurst Streets, Toronto (which is no longer in existence). From
1972 to 1976 Bryan taught a law course (two evenings per week) and graded test papers
for first-year students in the Certified General Accountants’ education and qualification
program, primarily at the Ryerson Polytechnic Institute (now Ryerson University)
campus in downtown Toronto. Earlier on, Bryan also taught Driver’s Education and
English as a Second Language.
Bryan was well-liked and will be missed by his many of his loyal long-time clients,
friends, associates, Duty Counsel colleagues and staff at Ontario Legal Aid, and many
of the residents and staff at his downtown condominium apartment building. He had a
special subtle wit and often his witticisms would bring a smile to your face or a
welcome chuckle or two to brighten your day.
Bryan loved his bacon and eggs, homemade chili (especially his late mother’s chili
recipe), steak and tomatoes, beef stew, shepherd’s pie, Portuguese custard tarts, butter
tarts, and pies. During his convalescent periods at home in between hospital stays he
would often ask his close friends, Tony or Margie, to purchase and deliver to him a
Tim’s Triple/Triple coffee and a plain old-fashioned donut which he would enjoy while
watching old movies on his big-screen TV.
Many thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto General
Hospital, Providence Healthcare (Scarborough) and the Toronto Grace Health Centre,
and to his homecare nurse, Nick, and his PSW, Dennis. Many thanks to Tony and
Margie who were his rock, and in particular to Stephen D, Jane K, Howard B, Warren
M, Julia Y, Lily H, Darren, Ali and Cesar, and to the many others who crossed paths
with Bryan over the years who are too numerous to mention.
