On Sunday May 3, 2020, Bhagwandai Veronica “Betty” Torrezao, loving wife and mother of eight children, passed away at the age of 89 years old.
Betty was born on July 9, 1930 Plantation Rose Hall, Canje, British Guyana to Sadhoo and Sanichari Sadhoo. She married Cecil Torrezao in 1950. Together, they raised eight children: Sheila Ursula, Rita, Gladys Barbara, Juliet, Joseph, Moses, Peter, and Joy. She immigrated to Canada in 1982.
Betty was a familiar face in the Rose Hall Town Market, Guyana, selling fruits, vegetables and handmade clothing. She also taught sewing classes to young women in her home. But her passion was people. She had a hospitable heart, and opened her heart to family and friends, ensuring that everyone had a warm meal and a place to stay. She was known for her kind heart and compassionate spirit.
Betty was preceded in death by her father, Sadhoo, mother, Sanichari, brothers Cyril, Mackhanlall, Pooran, Ramoo, sister Indo, daughter Sheila Ursula and granddaughter Angela. She is survived by her daughters, Rita, Gladys Barbara, Juliet, and Joy, her sons, Joseph, Moses and Peter, 14 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. A private funeral service will be held on Friday May 8, 2020, with a live stream of the service via Zoom video conferencing.
