It is with great sadness and much love that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, wife, sister and friend, Bernadette Elaine Cosburn. Bernadette passed away peacefully on February 2, 2024, at her home in Brampton, holding the hands of her husband and daughter, and surrounded by her sisters.
Bernadette was born and raised in Etobicoke, Ontario. She grew up with her parents (the late James and Marion O’Farrell), six sisters, Patricia Valitutti (Tony), Deborah Anderson, Marion Patterson (Nick), Colleen Mullen (Frank), Winna Smith (Glen) and Kelly Cundari (Joe) and brother, Bill O’Farrell (Darlene). She met her husband, Dan Cosburn, at Scarlett Heights High School and they were happily married for 48 years. Dan’s sister Judie McMillin (Bob) quickly became Bernadette’s seventh sister and dearest friend. Dan’s brother, Tom Cosburn, became a little brother to Bernadette too. Bernadette has over 20 first nieces and nephews. A big, beautiful, Irish family.
Bernadette and Dan raised their children, daughter, Sandra Pachas (Nick) and late son, Michael Cosburn, in Brampton, Ontario, in the same loving home for 41 years. Bernadette worked as a medical secretary until her retirement at 63. She loved her job, co-workers and patients. Bernadette had a quick wit and amazing sense of humour. She loved to laugh and have fun. If you were lucky enough to sit near her at a social gathering, you were guaranteed to have a good time. She was everyone’s friend.
Bernadette was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer in March of 2017. Bernadette would always say that she wasn’t dying of cancer, but living with cancer. In between (and often during) her many, many treatments, she would make the most of every healthy moment she had. She would head to different beaches in Ontario, have coffee, dinner and movie dates with Dan, and spend hours of quality time every week with her kids and grandkids (Jake and Kate) and make sure that memories were made and experiences were had. She made the most of her down days too, and became an avid reader and knitter. Bernadette fought her cancer diagnosis for 6+ years with dignity, strength and grace. She was a true inspiration to everyone around her. Her goal was to make it to her 70th Birthday - and she did, on June 14, 2023!
Bernadette will be missed. Every. Single. Day. But never forgotten. She is in the sun, the moon and the stars, with Michael.
