Ben (Bendt) Hummelshøj Nielsen
Ben Nielsen, 83, born on a farm near Vestervig, Denmark, died peacefully on March 3rd, 2022, in Brampton, Ontario at Burton Manor Long Term Care Home after a lengthy struggle with Parkinson’s Dementia.
Those who knew him will remember him as a true gentleman, perfectionist, with a dry sense of humour. A jack of all trades who enjoyed camping with his Leisure Travel Motorhome, gardening, playing whist and cribbage, watching the Toronto Maple Leaf’s, Blue Jays, and eating Danish pastries from Sunset Villa.
His parents Charles and Elna (Jensen), brothers Martin, Jerry, and sister Anni. Married 58 years to the love of his life and soul mate Laure. Their three children, Darlene, Dwayne, and Debra-Ann, and father-in-law to Rory, Nancy, and Shawn. Grandfather to Cole, Savanna, Jared, Blake, Bryce, Brooke, Owen, Jace, and Westin.
As a young man he held a variety of jobs, eventually leading to a successful 25-year career with Huck Manufacturing. As the manufacturing superintendent, he was known for his exemplary ability to supervise and motivate his team of 35 employees. His attention to detail yielded quality fastening systems that were on time and on budget, for aircrafts, trucks, trains, mines, and the automotive industry.
A casualty of overhead cuts in his early fifties, he was offered an early retirement package giving him the ability to embark on multiple creative ventures. This allowed him the opportunity to have increased flexibility, independence, be more creative, meet new people, travel, problem solve new situations, and receive monetary rewards for the work he did!
A successful entrepreneur with a natural ability in sales and marketing, he was very proud to be voted top salesman for Bond Industries. He created multiple businesses including B&L Motorhome Rentals, Amway, Melaleuca, Nielsen’s Irresistible Snacks, and was a partner with Intercontinental Holdings, a house building company.
True to form, after 47 years of dedicated work he decided to “retire” in London, ON. There was no stopping this man! He continued to operate the vending business part time and became president of his condominium’s corporation. Other time was spent enjoying “Timmy’s” coffee at the local watering hole with friends. Trips along Hwy 401, constantly watching the weather, dodging crazy 18 wheelers, travelling back and forth to Brampton to visit the kids and grandkids. Enjoying many adventures in the motorhome across Canada and through the US with his beloved wife and their cat Friskie.
Memories of his life and the people he touched will forever be remembered. Until we meet again …
