Arthur Raymond Walsh was born in Old Tredegar Wales on February 21, 1926 to William and Beatrice (Morris) Walsh. Like many a Welsh lad, he sang in the choir, often taking the solo. He and his five brothers, Eddie, Cyril, Stan, Wilf, and Don moved with their parents to Birmingham when Art was in his early teens. Art shipped off to Asia in 1944 where he served with the Reconnaissance Corps and took great pride in his precision on the parade square and earned the rank of Lance Corporal.
Back in Birmingham, Art reunited with the love of his life Mavis King, where they enjoyed dancing, going to the cinema and the races. They married in March 1951, and welcomed daughters Christine in 1952 and Valerie in 1954. Art and others, including brothers Stan and Cyril, built their own homes as part of the Self-Built Housing Program.
Art, Mavis and the girls moved to Toronto in 1957. Stephen was born in 1962 and the whole family settled in Brampton in 1963. There Art and Mavis raised their family, ensuring their children had many opportunities to be active in the community, including volunteering his time as a coach and league organizer. Art was a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Brampton Branch 15, where he enjoyed time with comrades, especially at the dartboard, snooker table, and with a hand of cribbage. And he loved teaching these games to his kids, and especially his grandkids, at home. Art also enjoyed the occasional trip to play the slots through the years in Vegas, Woodbine and Niagara and puttering in the garden.
Art passed away suddenly on Monday, January 16 2017. He was a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed but has left us all with wonderful memories full of joy and laughter.
