Antonio Antenos, known affectionately to many as Tony, Ninò or Tonino, spent his final days surrounded by family and friends, leaving this world on October 11, 2023, at the age of 84. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Anna Maria, their daughters Barbara, Enza, and Monica, grandchildren Kristine (David), Lucas (Laura), and Simone, great-grandchildren Francis, Charlotte, and Sophie, his sister Clelia (Mario), sister-in-law Pina (the late Giovanni), and all his nieces and nephews.
Ninò met the love of his life over gelato on September 2, 1960, at the Feast of St. Anthony’s in Torre de’ Passeri. Their marriage in Pescara in 1964 was the official start of their life together which would span almost six decades. Tony arrived in Toronto, with his wife and daughter, on October 16, 1966, and secured his spot, thanks to his Italian know-how, in the construction industry. He played a significant role in shaping Toronto's skyline by serving as a structural foreman and overseeing the construction of 43 high-rise buildings spanning from the Don Valley Parkway to Etobicoke, from the Esplanade to Yorkville. His influence extended beyond Toronto, as he also undertook projects in Barrie, Guelph, and Hamilton.
In the years following his retirement in 2001, Tony journaled and documented the important events that colored his new life, and he finally traveled for fun, returning to Italy as a tourist, visiting his daughters in California, Chicago, and New Jersey, and more. Even in retirement though, his professional experiences still had a stronghold. His adventures in construction were the subject of many passionate conversations: he was legendary – il leone – and inspired many a nephew to follow in his footsteps.
He left an indelible mark on those who knew him. He was hardworking, tireless, and had a remarkably strong work ethic. Ninò derived immense joy from his cherished culture and traditions, and always ensured there was an abundance of homemade wine (& grappa!), tomato sauce, sausage and other delicacies for family, friends and strangers.
Until the very end, Tony’s sharp intellect and remarkable memory never ceased to captivate those who had the privilege of knowing him. His wit, his stories, and his unwavering courage will forever remain etched in our hearts.
Friends and family will be received at the Ward Funeral Home (4671 Highway 7, Woodbridge) on Sunday, October 15, 2023, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 16, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Church (300 Ansley Grove Rd., Woodbridge) at 9:30 am.
