Anna Angela Gri
November 26, 1935 – March 16, 2024
Peacefully passed away at Humber River Hospital, on March 16, 2024 at the age of 88 with family by her side. She is predeceased by Daniele, her beloved spouse of 68 years, her older brother Philip Ely and younger brother, Victor Ely (Joan). Proud mother of Paul (Suzanne), Michael (Marilyn), David (Adriana), Anthony (Susan). Proud Nonna of Andrea (Scott), Danielle (Cody), Daniel, Jacqueline, Sierra, Sebastian, Adrian, Erica and Matthew, and cherished Bisnonna to Clara and Chloe.
Anna was born in Toronto in 1935 to parents who began immigrating from Italy in 1908. She had many accomplishments and started her career in the 1950’s by working at General Electric, followed by Glaxo Pharmaceuticals and was then a secretary at the Roman Catholic Churches of St. Jude’s and later, St. Philip Neri.
Nothing was more important to Anna than her family. She was the glue that held her family together with strength, an independent spirit and a sense of compassion. She was loving, intelligent and kind. Nonna Anna loved to cook Italian food and wrote a cookbook for her grandchildren in 2010 of her favorite recipes, including those that were passed on to her from her mother and previous generations of family. She spent hours knitting and crocheting making sweaters and blankets for the family.
Her work ethic and generosity has made her a role model for her four sons. She was a huge champion of her sons and grandchildren whom she encouraged to live their best lives, to pursue education, seek a good work/life balance and value close friendships. Anna loved sharing her knowledge of cooking and other bits of wisdom with her children, their spouses and her grandchildren. She was proud of them all and enjoyed attending their graduations and celebrating their accomplishments. She was a dedicated member of her church community and will be fondly missed by her extensive network of friends, some of whom she has known for more than 60 years.
Family and friends will be received at the Ward Funeral Home, Weston Chapel on Thursday, March 21st from 3:00-5:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm. The funeral mass will take place on Friday, March 22nd at 10:00am at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 2100 Jane Street in Toronto. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
