Our dear mother and nonna Angela Zan, 94, of Toronto, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2022, at Lakeside Long Term Care Centre, with her sons Rino and Leo at her bedside.

Angela was born in 1927 to Alberico and Livia Torressan, in Crespano del Grappa, a small mountainside town in the province of Treviso, in the Veneto region of Italy.

Angela was a strong, confident and adventurous woman who enjoyed travel and was never afraid of a challenge. After WWII she worked in the hotels and resorts of Venice and Switzerland in order to send money home to her parents. While there she made many friends and learned to speak German fluently. In the 1950's she moved to Australia for six years where she attended night school to learn English. After returning to Italy in 1964 she met a tall and handsome Livio and accepted his proposal of marriage and offer to move to Canada. In 1965 they were wed in Toronto where they began to raise their family. Along her travels she made life-long friends and touched the lives of all who met her.

Family was always her focus and Angela dedicated her life to being a magnificent wife and mother. Angela was the rock of not only her family, but also of her many friends, supporting everyone through the many passions and difficulties of their lives. She was determined that her children would succeed and integrate as she dragged them off to swimming lessons, skating lessons and then shipped them off to camp each summer. Ignorance was not tolerated by her and she pushed everyone to continuously learn, whether through formal school or just by reading. She led this by example by getting her drivers license at 45 and then learning how to program a VCR on her own (most of the time). Angela made it her mission to improve her life and the lives of everyone in her world.

She was also a passionate but humble cook, and when she wasn’t filling her family with food, she was filling her home with warmth and kindness. A part of her legacy are her hand-written recipes that we will replicate, we promise! She would often be found at St. Jude’s, volunteering her time to help her local parish, as well as finding the time to raise funds for the Lung Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and many other charities. She always said that no matter how little she had there would always be something there for others in need.

Angela is predeceased by her husband Livio Zan, her sister Ottelia Mascellini, her brother Leonildo Torresan and her niece Adriana Soppelsa. She is survived by her son Rino, his wife Jo-Ann, and their children, Joshua and Vittoria, as well as her other son Leo, his wife Jean, and their sons, Marco and Paul and by her sister Valeria Soppelsa (Vittorio), her brother Saverio Torresan and her beloved nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to the wonderful and caring staff at Lakeside Long Term Care Centre who made Angela's last years as comfortable as possible.

Visitation will take place on Sunday January 9th, 2022 4-8pm, at Ward Funeral Home, 4671 Highway 7, Vaughan, ON. There will be a funeral service at 10am, Monday January 10th, at St. Jude’s RC Church, 3265 Weston Rd.
