Andy Engel Knibbe
Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully into heaven on August 29, 2022 at the glorious age of 93. Andy was born on December 20, 1928 in Oude Wetering, The Netherlands. He was one of 6 children born to Jan and Ida Knibbe. In 1948, at age 19, he immigrated to Canada coming over on the ship Kota Inten. Life was not always easy those first few years in Canada as he adjusted to the climate, language and work opportunities. Andy held various jobs but they all involved sales: NuGrape pop delivery franchise, Jiffy lunch truck (day old leftovers made this job a favourite of his kids), Provimi animal feed and his business selling supplies to auto repair shops. Who can forget - Parts from Andy work out Dandy
Andy met his future wife, Rita Jenny Schuringa, in Toronto and they were married on May 11, 1951. The years that followed were filled with family life. Andy and Rita were the proud parents of:
- Sylvia (John) Smeenk
- Marilynne (Lawrence) Leavitt
- John (Charene) Knibbe
- Harry (Coby) Knibbe
- Winnie Smith (deceased, 2014)
- Julian (Ray) Louter
He was also blessed with 21 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren (and counting).
Andy was very involved in church and Christian school activities. He loved serving on committees and committees loved having him. He had a great sense of humour. Who can forget the ultimate Dad joke – What happened to the butcher when he backed into the meat grinder? He got a little behind in his orders. He was always up on current events and there were some very lively discussions whenever the family got together. Andy will be greatly missed.
The family would sincerely like to thank the caring staff of Holland Christian Homes for all they did for Andy.
