GOODRICH, ANDREW LATIMER (“ANDY”)
(1925-2010)
Andy died on June 19th, 2010, after a long battle with hospital bed sores, and, more recently, congestive heart failure. He died in the presence of his sons, John and Elessar.
Andy was youngest of four children born in Evanston, Illinois to Alonzo Charles Goodrich Jr. & Pauline Dole Goodrich. The family moved to Winnetka, Illinois, where he attended New Trier Public High School, graduating in 1943. While at New Trier, he played many sports, and excelled in Tennis. He and his partner, Howe Atwater, were Illinois State High School Doubles Champions, and US National Clay court Doubles Champions, Boys Division.
Immediately after high school, Andy joined the War effort. He graduated as a Pilot Lieutenant of the U.S. Army Air Corps (later called the Air Force), and flew both single-engine fighters and four-engine bombers.
Following the World War II, Andy attended Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 1949. He also lettered on the varsity Squash team.
Andy married Alice Ann Barnes in 1952, and in 1959, moved to Oakville, Ontario, Canada with Alice and their three sons, Elessar, Stephen, and John. Sadly, Alice passed away at too young an age in 1993.
From his arrival in Canada in 1959 until his retirement in 1987, Andy was a senior executive of several companies that manufactured and sold electrical and mechanical control and motor products to automobile, major appliance, and leisure time manufacturers.
Andy moved to Canada to start and manage the Canadian operation of the Dole Valve Company, paying off his start-up loan ahead of schedule. When Dole Valve was acquired by the Eaton Manufacturing Company in 1963, Andy stayed on as Vice President and General Manager. Later in his professional career, Andy was the Group General Manager at McGraw Edison, and the President and General Manager of Brevel Motors Corporation.
At one point in his career, Andy was invited to work in Detroit, Michigan, and, having accepted the position, bought a house there, and prepared to move his family. Andy, so moved by the going-away party given by many close friends, and also considering what he thought was best for his family, changed his mind and decided to remain in Oakville.
Andy was a Director of the Automotive Industries Association of Canada.
Carrying on his enthusiasm for tennis and golf, Andy was a Member and Director of the Oakville Club Ltd (Water Street, Oakville); Co-Founder, Owner, Member, and Director of the Burlington Racquets Club; and Member, Director, and President of the Oakville Golf Club. Despite severe arthritis later in his life, Andy continued to play golf, even when he needed to use crutches.
Andy volunteered for many years with the Oakville branch of the Canadian Red Cross, driving handicapped people to their medical appointments.
Throughout his life, Andy lovingly supported his family and friends, for which they have been, and continue to be, very grateful.
Andy was predeceased by his older brother Alonzo Charles (“Chuck”). Andy, loved by his family, is survived by his older brother Arthur (“Bud”), his sister Pauline (“Polly”), and his sons: Elessar and wife Lesley (Ely, England), Steve and sons Jeffrey and Zachary (Oakville), and John and wife Judith, and their children, Anne, Katherine, John, Daniel, and Elizabeth (Falmouth, Maine).
Family and friends will be received at the Ward Funeral Home, 109 Reynolds Street, Oakville (905-844-3221) on Friday, June 25th, from 6 - 9 pm. A Memorial Service will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, 89 Dunn Street, Oakville, at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 26. This will be followed immediately by a Burial at St. Jude’s Cemetery (Lakeshore Rd and Garden Dr, Oakville). A Reception will follow in the Member’s Lounge at the Oakville Golf Club (6th Line and Ridge Dr, Oakville) at 2:30pm.
Donations in memory of Andy’s life may be made to Knox Presbyterian Church, or a charity of your choice. Prayers accepted.
