March 21, 1930 – December 4, 2024
It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Amo Daldoss, who peacefully left us in his own bed on the morning of December 4th, 2024.
Amo was born on March 21st, 1930, in the Italian alpine village of Vermiglio in the province of Trentino. Amo will be forever missed by his beloved wife Lina (Domenica) and loving children Edy (Jim) and Peter/Pierino (Debbie). He was a devoted Nonno to James (Olena), Christopher (Elizabeth), Sarah, Erin (Cru) and Lauren (Brent), and caring Bisnonno to Olive, Pearl and Freddie. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Amo was the sixth of seven children. His father, Pietro, died of influenza when Amo was just a year old, leaving his pregnant mother, Teodora, to raise her young family through difficult times. Amo immigrated to Canada in 1953, and in 1955, he sent for the love of his life, Lina, to join him in Toronto, where they were married at St. Mary of the Angels Church on Davenport Road. Amo found work doing anything he could, including picking vegetables and construction labour.
The happy couple had their first child, a daughter, Edy, in 1957, followed by a son, Pierino (Peter), in 1958.
They formed a life-long relationship with Joe and Giuseppina Garito and partnered with them selling furnaces at their company, Liberty Heating. Amo and Joe sold furnaces from the back office at their store on St. Clair Avenue West, while Lina and Giuseppina operated a shoe store in the front, selling imported Italian shoes. Giuseppina taught Lina how to cook delicious southern Italian dishes in the basement kitchen, to the delight of Amo!
Amo and Lina cherished a close group of friends that regularly socialized and travelled together. Amo especially enjoyed meeting friends at the Trentino Club of Toronto to play Briscola, eat dinners and reminisce of their youth.
Amo’s family grew larger with James marrying Olena, Christopher marrying Libby, Lauren marrying Brent and Erin marrying Cru. Then came the great grandkids, Olive, Pearl and Freddie. What a delight! Almost every day, someone was at their house for a meal, espresso, glass of homemade wine, or just some of Amo and Lina’s salumi.
Even with the hardships growing up in Italy, he always held fond memories…telling his family fantastic and sometimes unbelievable stories about his time in Vermiglio. But Canada was his home, and he was proud of the life that he and Lina built together. One of their greatest joys was building a cottage on Bluewater Beach to accommodate the whole family and many friends.
Above all else, his love for Lina and the family was limitless, shaping every moment of his life with unwavering devotion and profound care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Amo's name to the Daily Bread Foodbank
