Alma Bartozzi
With a heavy heart we share with you the passing of Alma Bartozzi at the age of 91. She passed away peacefully at the Humber River Hospital in Toronto.
Although we are deeply saddened with her passing, we are thankful for the time she was with us, and take comfort she will be joining her beloved husband Sergio. Alma was a caring and devoted mother to Daniel (late Pamela Flaherty) and Kathy (Simon Garrison). She was a much loved Nonna by her grandchildren Noah and Carolyn. She will be missed by her sisters Anna (late Adriano Pasqualini) and Carla (Mario Marconi), her sister-in-law Lelia (late Edo DiCintio) along with her nieces, nephews and their families in both Toronto and Italy.
At the fresh age of 23, Alma left Senigallia, Italy with her future in-laws, boarded the vessel “Homeland” in Genoa, and landed at Pier 21 in Halifax, Canada. On the journey she had the promise of marriage and the beginnings of a new life in Toronto. She was also bringing her recently purchased Necchi sewing machine to start off her career. She married her sweetheart and neighbour Sergio shortly after and the rest is history. They had two children, worked very hard and enjoyed the life they made together for 59 years.
Alma was a great cook and showed her love by feeding her family and friends whenever she could. She and Sergio came from a farming background in Italy and they greatly enjoyed tending their garden and greenhouses where they grew a wide variety of flowers and vegetables. There was always plenty of home made food ready for sharing or giving away to the kids.
Alma was a strong woman who liked her independence (she was still driving her car at 91!). She was adamant in staying in the house her husband built (physically) for them 60 years ago for as long as she could – and her wishes came true. Her greatest joy was always being with family and watching them grow up and achieve their goals.
Family and friends will be received at the Ward Funeral Home, 2035 Weston Road (north of Lawrence Avenue West) on Wednesday September 27th from 2-4 pm and from 6-9 pm. A funeral mass will be held at All Saints Catholic Church, 1415 Royal York Road, Etobicoke on Friday September 29th at 9:30 am. Entombment to follow at Glendale Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that expressions of sympathy be shown by donating to Humber River Hospital. Please visit our Book of Memories at
