Aivars Bergs

October 10, 1931 — January 18, 2025

Aivars Bergs

Aivars Bergs was born on a seaside farm in Dundaga, Latvia on October
10, 1931 and passed away peacefully, aged 93, at Brampton Civic Hospital
on January 18, 2025, following a few months of declining health. A man
of deep and steadfast Christian faith, a loving husband and a devoted
father, he will be sorely missed by his wife of 65 years, Anita, his
children, Veronica (late Brien), Peter (Darlene), and Roger (Tina), and
grandchildren Catherine (Erik), David (Carolin), Clara, Stephanie,
Caroline, and Claudia.

From a young age, he demonstrated a strong work ethic and a desire to
better himself through education – traits that he passed on to his
children. After his family fled their homeland as war refugees, Aivars
spent his teen years in Köping, Sweden, where he worked in a machine
shop and studied at the local technical college in the evenings.
Following the family’s arrival in Canada in 1951, he found employment in
the aircraft industry before being accepted into mechanical engineering
at the University of Toronto (despite lacking a high school diploma). He
subsequently earned a masters degree at the newly-formed University of
Waterloo and went on to a long and distinguished career as a
professional engineer, widely respected for his expertise, innovation,
and mentorship.

In his leisure time, Aivars was a skilled handyman – always fixing or
improving something at home or at the cottage. His beautifully crafted
woodworking projects will be enjoyed and admired for years to come. He
generously supported others’ projects with his time and talents, from
helping with fender repair to harpsichord building to restoring a
hurricane-damaged school in Grenada. A man of few words, he will be
remembered for his kindness, wisdom, calm disposition, patience, and dry
humour.

The family extends sincere gratitude to the hospital staff who cared for
Aivars and helped make him comfortable during his final weeks.
