To Auntie Yolanda, Sheldon, Stacey, Chris and family.

Regrettably Mom, Vanessa and myself could not make the required arrangements in time to leave Vancouver and come to Toronto to pay our respects to Uncle Welles in person. If we had been able to be there, I would have liked to have said a few words to express how I felt about Uncle Welles and what he meant to me.

Uncle Welles was my Mom, Esme’s, younger brother. The two of them were close and there always seemed to be a special bond between the two of them.

Living on the west coast of Canada in Vancouver has always meant that we have had a large geographical distance between us and my mother’s family members. Still, we would visit from time to time and I always remember how happy my Mom would be when she was going to spend some time with her brother Welles. My sister Vanessa and I also looked forward to seeing our Uncle Welles and we remember the times we spent with him fondly.

We didn’t see Uncle Welles very often but when he would come to visit, or when we went to visit him and his family, he always made a great impression on me. Without a father around or many male role models to learn from, I always cherished the lessons I could learn from the men in my Mom’s family. The impression Uncle Welles made on me from the very start was that he was a good man and I looked up to him as a child. It was clear that family was important to him and he made sure we knew we were an important part of his family. I was young and impressionable, and I remember watching him, getting to know him and speaking with him. I learned many lessons about being a man from Welles including the importance of doing the right thing even when no one is watching. Welles was firm and fair and he taught me the importance of living with integrity and character.

The lessons I learned from him I carry with me today. I have grown to be a man and am setting examples for my own son, niece and nephew now. I see the influence Welles had on me in my son Dylan whenever he says ‘excuse me’ as he walks past people or stops to hold a door open for an older person.

I am grateful for the time that I was blessed to share with my Uncle Welles. I am grateful for the example that he set for me at a young age and the lessons he taught me. Lesson’s that I now share and teach. I don’t believe that I ever thanked Welles properly or let him know how important he was to me for the positive impact he had on my life. When I see him again I will be sure to let him know but for now I will share this with my Auntie Yolanda and my cousins Sheldon, Stacey and Chris; your husband and your father was a great man and a good man. He enriched us all by being in our lives.

We all loved him very much.
