Obituary

Age 81, died of Parkinson's related complications on March 6th, 2019. Beloved wife of over 50 years of the late John van Wissen. Hendrika is survived by her children; John (Sylvie), Margi, and Grace (Steve). Oma is fondly remembered by her grandchildren; Josée, Erik, Jake, Ellyssa, Matthew and Victoria. Mom was a woman of many gifts and talents. She was a gymnast, long time gymnastics coach and judge, librarian's assistant, garden centre and nursery owner, and author. Stoic till the end, mom exemplified strength, faith and perseverance by first nursing her husband through his long illness while battling her Parkinson's for 25 years.
A Celebration of her life will be held by immediate family members. Donations to your local Parkinson's Society would be appreciated by the family.

John, Marji, Grace and families - We were so very sad to hear of the passing of your Mom/Oma. It had been some time since I saw both your Mom and Dad but Riekie was always so good about looking me up when she came out to Alberta to visit her sister in Calgary. We know you will miss her but we hope you will find comfort in the memories that are yours to cherish for always. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Catriena (nee Michels) and Les Brubacher

My condolences to the whole van Wissen family. Being in the gardening business was the perfect place for Riekie because gardening brings happiness to people and that was her main goal in life. If there would be a section in Wikipedia for the most loving and caring people, her name would be there in bold. Every person she has been in contact with will remember her warmth and smile. I consider myself lucky to have been in contact with her. Riekie, no more suffering... Just back to loving and caring for your loved ones. Denise Frenette

John, Margi, Grace and Families, Susan and I were sorry to hear the loss of your mother/Oma. It was always a pleasure whenever I dropped by for a visit when I had to go to Mississauga for work. She along with your Dad were always so glad to see me and welcoming every time. One time we were having coffee in the basement and your Opa Jos and Oma were over from Holland. Your mother looked at me and said "look how happy she is here...knitting etc. When "my John" came back to Holland for a visit and dated me..she told me you could go out with him here but you are not going to get married and go to Canada with him".....and your mom smiled! Pleasant memories of both. Gary and Susan
